(Collection of The Quilters’ Guild of the British Isles)
90 in. x 88 in. (229 cm x 223 cm)
Top: silks and taffetas
Backing: wool challis
Wadding: thin white wool blanket
Construction: hand pieced over papers
Quilting: no quilting; tied at intervals
Edges: butted. Fringed on three sides
The quilt was given to me by my husband, Philip, in March 1994. He had purchased it for about £220 from an antique dealer in Newcastle under Lyme, who unfortunately knew nothing about its origins.
The
silk fabrics are a mix of plain, plaid and checked fabrics. Some have
woven patterns; others are printed. There is a mix of black with bright
colours: red, yellow, blue and green. The backing is a plain dark red.
The fringe is 12 cm deep, printed with a repeat floral pattern, expertly
dated to 1930 and printed on an ALJABA machine.
