Moira Neal

Hello! I am a free machine artist and I love to upcycle old cotton sheets to use in my work. I enjoy dyeing, printing, stamping, marbling and appliqueing them to create my own unique cloth. I no longer make large bed quilts and now concentrate on making quirky work, which I can use for my range of greetings cards I sell under the name of The Fallen Angel Co. I have them printed 5" x 7". You can see them on the website called Love From The Artist. Click here (or you may have to copy and paste into your browser) to see my cards which are printed on demand and are great quality. You can buy three for one postage cost. The cards are just £2.00 each. I also sell to trade

I have made a range of designs called Sewing Machine Girls which appeal to stitchers, so take a look...if you have any 'quilty' friends' birthdays coming up!

I have had a knee problem for the passed two years and this meant I was unable to walk any distance so, instead, I stayed in my studio and wrote a book called 'Colourful Canvas Landscapes' and went on to learn how to use InDesign, the industry standard layout package. In April 2016 I decided to enter the Quilters' Guild competition 'On the Beach' and was knocked out when I heard my quilt had won third place!

After I had written and published my next book 'Mixed Media Designs and Backgrounds' I entered a quilt for the June 2017 Malvern show under the 'Gardener's World' theme. I totally could not believe that not only did my quirky quilt WIN but I also won first prize for fabric painting and printing and overall championship too! Wow... I have never won a rosette in my life so to win three rosettes, three trophies and two sewing machines was totally awesome. In 2017 my quilt 'Free to Just be Me' came third in the Quilters Guild 'Free' challenge at the FOQ.

I have never made journal quilts before making two for Grosvenor Show's 'Sweet Treats' challenge, judged in January 2018. I was amazed and delighted my two little quilts, featuring cats in a cake shop won second prize.

Day schools and play dates on offer:
I have a studio in Histon and can teach up to four people. Days include a lovely two course lunch. I don't have set dates...just ring me to arrange 01223 701422 or email me me with the form below. Alternatively I can come to your group.

I love to teach and share my love of carefree, free machining and offer play days in 'Creative Free Machine Quilting'.

NEW play day for 2018.....Tuscan Landscapes.... A3 sized picture making with appliqué.

I also have a love of making 'Fabric Faces' to bring your work to life and this is another of the days I offer.

'Colourful Canvas Landscapes' is a play date in which we paint onto canvases first and then applique colourful fabrics onto them and carelessly free machine then in place with plenty of wonky black stitching as if we are sketching with a black pen!

'Take an Old White Cotton Sheet' is the talk about dyeing, printing, stamping, rusting and marbling, among many other techniques, to create my own designs to use in my work. I also use old cotton sheets to make paper fabric and cotton wool fabric to create the backgrounds for many of my quirky pieces of mixed media which become printed as greetings cards. This talk is very informative and hopefully, there is something for everyone. I use a data projector for this as well as bringing plenty of samples for people to look at and handle.

'Block Printing in Jaipur and Indian Inspired Designs' is a power point presentation of masses of colourful pictures of a ten day holiday in Jaipur and all the design inspiration seen on old buildings and wooded blocks. Combined with a trip to the V&A's exhibition, 'The Fabric of India' I have plenty of design ideas to show and share. I also have plenty of Indian fabric for members to look at and handle.

'Latiniscus Stupides for Quilters' is about my recent work and is illustrated with masses of pictures of my work in progress and how the designs evolve and change and show my way of working. My quilt 'Latin for Quilters' won first for the theme at the Malvern show. It also won an award for fabric painting as well the overall championship winning me three rosettes, three trophies and two sewing machines. Hopefully you will find this an amusing, informative and inspiring talk. I will bring plenty of pieces to show as well as the prize winning quilts.
