Jan Allston

Living with husband Keith in Polegate, East Sussex and having retired from a career in firstly teaching mathematics and latterly management and teaching of ICT in secondary school in 2004, I took up quilting after I saw a wholecloth quilt being made at Beamish Open Air Museum. It inspired me because of the geometric patterns and the sheer beauty of the fabric with its highlights and shadows.

I enrolled in a quilting class locally in 2005 and was hooked. The creative side of quilting with the use of maths everywhere, the tactile aspect of the fabrics and the satisfaction when an item is completed have taken me to heights I never anticipated.

I have been coordinator for Region 2 and lead trustee for membership in The Quilters' Guild of the British Isles. I am now exhibitions organiser for Region 2 and am in charge of Lullingstone Quilt & Craft Festival in Kent as well as having been joint coordinator for the Spotlight@40 Gallery at Festival of Quilts 2019 where one person from each region of The Guild had been asked to contribute a piece of contemporary work to celebrate the 40th anniversary of The Quilters' Guild. Each of these pieces has been retained in the permanent collection at headquarters in York after the show and the two last Knitting & Stitching shows of that year.

I have started up a replacement .io group to replace the Yahoo group for this organisation too (members only) and occasionally design projects and write articles for the British version of Patchwork & Quilting magazine as well as The Quilt Pattern Magazine, an online publication from the USA. I organise coach trips from my local area to national quilt shows here in the UK and abroad. When I do get time to sew, I find it very relaxing as I have the Bernina 830 and the Artista 630 with embroidery module and Designer Plus software which is another outlet for my creative streak! Quilt design is another passion and I use EQ8 for creating quilt patterns as the possibilities are endless.

I have completed a four month world cruise in 2017 and 2018 as well as another all round South America in 2019 and one to the Amazon in 2020 where I was able to teach groups of ladies how to make quilts! I have been to various quilts groups to speak about my travels and quilting on cruise ships.

I have a wide range of workshop projects for all day or half day workshops; the list is available here along with details of my talks:
