Deborah McGuire

Hello! I'm Deb. You could call my quilt making a hobby, but it's more of a compulsion! I have been making quilts since 2000 and my passion is modern quilts that reference classic British quilt history. I am an enthusiastic advocate of the practice of traditional hand quilting and the use of British historical hand quilting patterns. I post my work on IG @plainstitchdeb or at

As well as making quilts I also love to write about them. I write a regular column for The Quilter magazine 'Notes on Quilting'. By day I am a studying for an MA, my paper researches how quilt makers created legacy in the past through the items that they made. I also work as an occasional longarm quilter. I am a member of the British Quilt Study Group and publish papers in Quilt Studies, I am a member of the Modern Group. I am a Non Executive Director of The Guild’s commercial company FOQ Ltd and was previously the first Digital Officer. I now sit on the Collections Committee for the Museum Collection. In the past I have been a quilt pattern designer, sewing teacher and sewing school and shop owner. I love to feel the thread of history in the quilts that I make.
