BQSG Study Day: Exploring Research

Saturday 17th May 2014

The Harris Museum, Preston

Quilts can be fascinating items to study and if you have always wondered how to go about unlocking their secrets here is your chance to find out more. This is a full day workshop on how to begin quilt research. The sessions are suitable for beginners to quilt research and those wishing to gain new ideas on research techniques or who haven’t done research for a while.

On the day you will be able to learn about different approaches to studying historic and contemporary quilts and quiltmaking practice. There will be guidance on selecting a research topic, finding information, putting quilts into context and working with museums. There will also be a practical study session with the chance to examine quilts and fabrics in detail and learn how to ‘read’ a quilt. We will be able to study some quilts from the Harris Museum’s collection. There will also be an opportunity to discuss your proposed or ongoing research with others.

The day will be led by Isabel Dibden Wright, previously Senior Lecturer in the School of Design at Manchester Metropolitan Unversity, head of the research panel of the BQSG.

The cost of the day is £30 for Quilters’ Guild Members and Friends of the Harris Museum or £45 for non-members. This includes tea/coffee but does not include lunch. The museum has a cafe or you may bring a packed lunch. The day will run from 10.00 am to 4.00pm.

To book please  download a booking form or send an SAE marked ‘Study Day Booking Form’ to Isabel Dibden Wright, 55 South Drive, Chorltonville, Manchester M21 8DZ.
