Two Fabric Books and some Remainders

This time I shall only properly review two books as I would also like to tell you about some relevant books currently remaindered.

I am taking Marnie Fogg's books not in chronological order, but as she wrote them, so firstly, published by Batsford in 2008, is 1960s Fashion Print, a Sourcebook. The blurb describes Marnie Fogg as a “fashion expert and media consultant” so do not expect academia, the minimal text is an easy read. But this book is really about the fabrics, all shown in full colour, filling every page with the psychedelic brightness of the 60's: the cover and frontispiece say it all.

The book begins with a one-page Contents - even the chapter headings have the 60's feel- then a one-page Introduction and chapter one is Art into Print. Three pages of text lead into twenty-five pages of fabric illustrations, all have reasonable captions but do not specify the material e.g. cotton/man-made etc. or the size depicted. Chapter two: Revivals and Reflections follows the same format; two pages of text and forty-three of illustrations. Chapter three: Flower Power has one text page, thirty-three of illustrations, chapter four: 'lost in Multicoloured Hues' covers the drug culture in two pages followed by thirty-six of illustrations. Chapter five: Magical Mystery Tour, has a page on the hippies then thirty-one of illustrations including clothes by Celia Birtwell and Zandra Rhodes. A one-page Bibliography, two pages for the Index and a final Acknowledgements and Picture Credits end the book.

So, if you have been counting, this book has text:illustrations in the ratio of 1: 20:essentially a well-produced picture book of 60's fabrics, enjoyable to get into the feel of the period.

A useful reference tool needs more data which is why I was so pleased by Marnie Fogg's next book: 1950s Fashion Print. Again, published by Batsford - in 2010 - this follows a similar format but the text is thoughtful and detailed, altogether a more serious book.

As before, this book is beautifully produced in full colour with mostly full-page reproductions of the textiles; however here the extended captions are more incisive plus the fabrics often have their composition and size details included.

So for the details:1950s Fashion Print starts with a Contents page, and the ten page Introduction has six text pages, a succinct overview of textile design. Chapter one is Abstraction, roughly seven text pages of the thirty-two; chapter two is Narrative, Novelty and the Jive. Of the thirty-eight pages, a bare two are text and this chapter includes the American influence. Chapter three, Artistic Licence has three text pages - with references - and twenty-three of illustrations, chapter four is Kinetic, two text, thirty-two fabric pages; chapter five: Domestic, three pages text out of the thirty-four pages. Again, the book has a one-page Bibliography, a two page Index and a page each for Acknowledgements and Picture Credits.

Though Marnie Fogg's 1960s has its limitations, at the price it is a good buy; her 1950s is only available as a hardback but is a so much more mature work that I thoroughly recommend it:  a readable and well-illustrated account of 50's textile design and designers, useful for helping date mid-century revival patchwork.

No doubt most of the book-buyers amongst you look in your local remaindered bookshops regularly for quilt books but you may not know Postscipt as a source. They have been selling (remaindered) books by mail since 1987: you can have a catalogue plop through your letterbox every month or they have a website with more stock - .

As this is the British Quilt study group I don't review many American quilt books, but I can personally recommend both Linda Eaton's Quilts in a Material World, Selections from the Winterthur Collection @ £9.99 - excellent at full price - (code 91781 ) and Robert Kiracofe's Going West, Quilts and Community, a Smithsonian Museum exhibition catalogue well worth £7.99 (code 73573)

Marnie Fogg, 1960s Fashion Print, A Sourcebook, was published in 2008 by Batsford as an imprint of Anova Books Company Ltd, ISBN hardback 9781849940344, paperback 9780713490541.Amazon have it new at £16.14 p/b and £13.19 hardback (!). It’s also available second-hand at prices from £15.21 (p/b) or £11.54 (h/b) plus p & p.

Her 1950s Fashion Print was published by Batsford, same imprint, in 2010, ISBN 978190638881, no paperback. This is £12.80 new from Amazon or from £8.70 second-hand plus p & p.
